“Those hours that you spend outside of school need to be applied to something very important […] which is why I chose Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C.” – Kerstein, Extern

Hello everybody, my name is Kerstein Camillion, and I’m an extern in the Transactional Department. I found out about ALBPC by doing a quick Google search for the top real estate law firms in New York. From there, I visited their website and was impressed by the work the attorneys were doing and the articles they had written. I realized that for my 2L year, I wanted to do what I could to secure an externship here.

When I first applied, I received an email asking me to set up an interview. What’s interesting is that the firm actually sends a questionnaire beforehand with personal questions like “What’s your favorite song?” or “What’s your favorite childhood memory?” That helped me understand a little bit about the culture at the firm, showing that they’re interested in getting to know who you are as a person.

One thing I really appreciated about the interview process was that I was interviewed by Adam himself. That showed me that he’s genuinely interested in everyone who has the opportunity to work here. It’s clear that he makes time for this to ensure that the firm and its externs are the right fit for each other.

One of the reasons I love working at Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C. is the access I get to some of the best attorneys in the field, particularly in New York. Within the Transactional Department, I work under Rosemary and alongside Jason and Amy in the Finance Department. What I like most about working with Jason and Amy is that I can ask them as many questions as I need, and they encourage me to do so. Not once have they frowned upon my questions, and I think this approach has allowed me to become a better future attorney.

My day-to-day is a bit different each time. Sometimes I know exactly what I’ll be working on, but other times I’m heading to closings all over the city, which is really exciting. It’s nice to work on a lot of documents and then be able to put a face to the name of the person you’re helping. Attending a closing is one of my favorite things because I feel like I’m helping a borrower take one step closer to their goal, which I find fulfilling in transactional work.

For future externs, my advice is to be prepared to learn when you get here. The attorneys are ready to teach, so don’t hesitate to ask as many questions as you need. You have access to some of the best real estate attorneys in New York, and that’s a rare opportunity.

Another piece of advice I’d give is to recognize that you’re taking time away from law school. So, the hours you spend outside of school should be spent gaining valuable learning experiences. Whatever externship you choose, make sure to do proper research to ensure it’s a place where you’ll truly learn, which is one of the reasons I chose Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C.
