“There has been a true emphasis on making sure that I am learning and engaging in the work” – Mikaela, Transactional Summer Associate
My name is Mikaela Mahaney, and I am a rising 2L at New York Law School. I am a legal extern in the transactional department, working closely with my supervising attorney, Rosemary. It has been such a pleasure working with Rosemary this summer—she has been an incredible mentor, teaching me so much about transactional law, document preparation, closings, and the various types of files she handles in her everyday practice.
Depending on the day, my responsibilities vary. I might be reviewing lien or title search reports, preparing documents for closings, or actually attending closings. I also collaborate with the paralegals in the department, as well as with Rosemary and another attorney, Keith. It’s always rewarding to complete a closing or finalize a set of documents and receive their feedback.
Working at Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C. has been an amazing experience for me after completing my 1L year of law school. The firm has been such a welcoming and educational place to work. Everyone here has been incredibly supportive, and there’s a strong emphasis on ensuring that I am learning and engaging with the work.
One of the highlights of my summer has been conducting closings on my own. Being able to stand in the room, represent Rosemary and Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C., and collect all the necessary documents was a huge milestone for me. It was incredibly fulfilling to achieve my goal of leading a closing independently, rather than just shadowing.
Another favorite experience was assisting with the preparation of an article with Adam. Conducting research and contributing to the writing process was a great opportunity to apply my skills in a real-world setting, beyond the academic environment.
Adam has been an exceptional boss to work under this summer. He has always been open to answering my questions, whether they are about a specific assignment or a broader area of law that I’m unfamiliar with. Adam has been dedicated to engaging me in the practice and ensuring I am an active participant in the work, rather than just observing. He also provides valuable feedback and works closely with me to ensure the quality of my work meets high standards.
For anyone coming in as an extern, my advice is to come with an open mind and a readiness to learn. Ask as many questions as you can—everyone here is incredibly supportive, kind, and invested in your education. They genuinely care about the value you’re gaining from this experience and how you’ll carry it forward.
I’d also encourage you to seek advice and information not only from the partners and attorneys but also from the paralegals. They are extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and can often be your best resource during your time here.
