“What sets this firm apart from the rest is the people who work here.”

I have been a legal extern in the litigation department since January. My externship experience has been unique to any other job I’ve worked because of the type of work done here and the people who comprise this firm. What I enjoy most about my day-to-day is the variety of topics that I am asked to research and learn about. One day, I can be researching how to bring about a partition action, whereas another day, I’m learning about Section 8 enhanced vouchers. Through this experience, I have learned a great deal about various areas of real estate law, most of which was unfamiliar to me.

The people I have been surrounded by throughout this externship have contributed to my growth as a soon-to-be attorney. The attorneys at this firm strive to help law students like myself become better writers and researchers, and overall better attorneys. What sets this firm apart from the rest is the people who work here. Dedication and commitment to clients, as well as comradery and cooperation, make for a more efficient law practice.

The most interesting case I worked on was a project assigned by one attorney I worked with. We were looking into the Department of Buildings’ issuances of violations for illegal hotels to determine if there were any patterns or red flags concerning these violations. One of our clients has been cited multiple times in multiple different buildings, which became the starting point of the investigation. What made this project stand out was the fact that it was an investigative project rather than a research project, and uncovering information became thrilling.

My best advice to an incoming extern is to be proactive. It is important to reach out to the attorneys, and to show your interest in this field. Do your best to get involved in various projects, and aim to work on a piece that gets published in the New York Law Journal. Adam likes to see an extern who is hungry to learn about real estate and to be involved in as many aspects of this firm as possible.
