“I ended up really liking it, it gave me a lot of different exposures” – Caitlyn, Previous Extern

“Hi, my name’s Caitlyn Kelly, and I’m a rising 3L at New York Law School. This summer, I’m a summer associate at Adam Leitman Bailey PC, where I’ve had the opportunity to work in both the transactional and litigation departments.

I originally came to the firm as an extern in the spring of 2021 during my 2L year. After applying and going through the interview process, I was selected along with four other externs. I think what set me apart was my hard work, willingness to take on new challenges, and making myself stand out by seeking out assignments.

At first, I didn’t have specific real estate experience, but I was drawn to the firm after learning about its success and team. I worked hard and found that I really enjoyed the transactional side, especially being involved in purchase transactions for real property and co-ops. I helped with everything from due diligence to attending the closing table for the bank’s transactions. On the litigation side, I worked on research, writing demand letters, complaints, and arbitration memos for collections cases.

Law school has been great for building theoretical knowledge, but the experience here has really shown me what practicing law looks like on a day-to-day basis. I’ve gained hands-on experience that law school doesn’t offer, like working with partners and associates directly, and the responsibility I was given early on has been a highlight.

One of the most rewarding experiences was being able to work one-on-one with Adam on a major buyout deal for rent-stabilized tenants and a prominent DJ case. I also recently went to trial for a lawsuit involving a family’s corporate dissolution.

The biggest challenge was balancing both departments with overlapping deadlines. But the firm encourages work-life balance, especially for those considering family life in the future, which has been very reassuring. I personally took on a lot of work, but I don’t regret it because I was able to dive deep into the projects and get tangible results.

For anyone coming in, I’d advise making yourself known and putting yourself out there. The firm is small, and you’re not spoon-fed assignments. Take the initiative to ask for more work, seek constructive feedback, and speak up about what you want to learn. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes—it’s part of the learning process.”
