Several bar and legal services groups have organized free legal clinics for victims of Hurricane Sandy and training for lawyers on disaster issues. The following organizations are holding storm-related events in the coming days:
The New York State Bar Association will host a free CLE training on providing legal assistance to hurricane victims that will also be webcast live. The program will give an overview of state and federal relief programs and feature panelists from various agencies explaining relief options and assistance programs offered through the American Red Cross, FEMA, the IRS, the Coast Guard, the Small Business Association, the state Department of Labor and the state Division of Financial Services. Panelists also will cover how to counsel clients on disaster-relief issues ranging from insurance issues, landlord-tenant issues, unemployment assistance, lost document replacement, and family law matters.
