“You Have to Be a Team Player.”
My name is Jeffrey Kahn, I’m 24 years old, I attend New York Law School. I interned at Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C. for school credit.
Working here was a great experience, I gained a lot of skills that I would not have gained in the classroom setting: I gained interpersonal skills, research and writing skills, communication skills. I mainly worked in the Condo and Coop Litigation department, spent a little time with Landlord and Tenant Law. I did a lot of writing memorandum and researching different areas of law.
I have had a chance to work with Adam directly, I’m currently finishing up an article regarding whether or not condominium or cooperative boards can cut services for delinquent owners. He has been a great mentor and someone I can go to if I ever have a question about my writing style.
Working here I’ve learned that you have to be able to be a team player in the office setting. You have to be able to take criticism, and know how to build off of the criticism you receive from each attorney. Each attorney, when they give you an assignment, they have different styles, and you kind of want to bring in your own style, but stay to what they want, and what they want specific.
One experience that stands out in my mind is when one of the supervising attorneys gave me an assignment. They seemed a little bit lost with the assignment but I spent a lot of hours researching it and I was able to figure it out, and that supervising attorney took my work and used it in their memo of law to the client.
The best aspect of working here was from day one I felt like I was part of the Adam Leitman Bailey family, and everyone treated me with open arms. Any of the attorneys that, you know, I had a question, they always were there to answer me and always respected what I had to say.
I think this externship was really just a great experience. It was one of my first experiences in a law office setting, and I think I’ve gained a lot of skills that I can use to grow in my legal career and profession.
